The Penguin was supposed to be a limited series. Get in, get out, and goodbye. But TV fans know that isn’t always how things go. It's one thing if the HBO Max show didn’t do well or was only average. Then we wouldn’t see Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb) and Cristin Milioti (Sofia Gigante) until The Batman Part 2 or another project in that universe. Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive responses from fans and the Golden Globe nominations, we could see The Penguin return for season 2.
During an interview with Variety, Matt Reeves gave a positive update on a second season saying,
"“Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”"Matt Reeves
Those were beautiful words from someone who gets it. Matt Reeves was one of the executive producers on The Penguin, but he made sure to give the credit to Lauran LeFranc and mention that season 2 wouldn’t happen just because. He knows there’s something unique about the show and it needs to remain that way. It would be easy to put out a bland product and hope for the best, but it wouldn’t achieve what the first season did.
Despite The Penguin ending with cliffhangers like Selina Kyle reaching out to her sister Sofia and Oz Cobb becoming the biggest crime boss in Gotham City, the show could have ended there. It would have been disappointing, but that’s the way things go. However, Lauren LeFranc smartly left the door open while giving viewers a more than satisfying ending.
Now, there’s no guarantee that Lauren Lefranc wants to do another season of The Penguin. Even if she says she has, things could change. She could become more satisfied with her project and move on to something else. That's something people would understand. The alternative, not so much.
There's a chance that Lauren Lefranc won't be involved and someone else will take over. This would be a mistake, but it’s possible. Hopefully, things will come together. There’s no reason a second season wouldn’t do well (if not better) with the current team.
Showrunner Lauren LeFranc, production designer Kalina Ivanov, and everyone else behind the scenes have to be involved on top of actors Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. Without them it won’t feel the same and the viewers will notice. Stay tuned to Caped Crusades to see if The Penguin returns to HBO Max.
