HBO Max's The Penguin gets three big Golden Globe nominations

Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell get recognized for their roles in HBO Max's The Penguin with Golden Globe nominations as the show does something no other DC Comics series has before.

The Penguin did more than overachieve as a show. It became one of the best series of 2024 and one of the premiere comic book shows in years falling in with brilliant superhero projects like The Boys, Watchmen, and Daredevil. What set this show over the top was the amazing acting, writing, and directing. This is more than just this writer’s opinion too. The Penguin's greatness has led to recognition by the people behind the Golden Globes nominations.

The Penguin received a nomination for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Performers Cristin Milioti (who played Sofia Gigante) and Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb) were both (respectively) nominated for Best Performance in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television. While it is a bit shocking that Farrell was nominated, there was no way Cristin Milioti would be snubbed. However, Milioti told The Hollywood Reporter that the news was "...very exciting, very exciting."

"“And just very, very joyful. My God, the women in my category. I don’t have words to describe how surreal it is and how overwhelmed I am being nominated alongside them. They’re all so brilliant.”"
Cristin Milioti

To put things into perspective, you have to look at who else was nominated. Cristin Milioti is in the same category as Jodie Foster who's up for her role as Liz Danvers in HBO’s True Detective: Night Country and Sofía Vergara for Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s Griselda. Both women are accomplished performers who slayed in their roles. That said, don’t be shocked if Cristin Milioti walks away with the award Sofia Gigante through a gassed house.

The Penguin’s Golden Globe nomination is the first DC Comics show to be nominated for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. It's a major accomplishment, but this writer doubts it's the last award the show will be nominated for. He fully expects writer Lauren LeFranc to be nominated for an award for her fantastic writing. There’s also production designer Kalina Ivanov who brought Gotham City to life better than anyone.

And, as I've been saying since before The Penguin was released, Cristin Milioti will end 2025 with an Oscar. She was too good in this role not to. To hit that point home, her portrayal of Sofia Gigante was so good that most comic book fans had no complaints about her portrayal. That is a victory in itself, but an Oscar would be better. Stay tuned to Caped Crusades to see if the happens.
