After months of waiting for an update on season 5 of Harley Quinn, we finally get one. DC Comics' hit animated series will return on Thursday, January 16th, 2025. The 2025 release makes this the first time the show didn’t have a complete series in consecutive years since the break between seasons 2 and 3. However, there was A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special, and Kite Man: Hell Yeah! in 2023. Then in 2021, writer Tee Franklin released Harley Quinn: The Animated Series – The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour comic book. So, technically, there was never a year without content from that universe.
The trailer showed a lot of what’s to come. The biggest is the move from a giant rat-infested Gotham City to the shining city of Metropolis and the arrival of Brainiac (for more on Brainiac, watch the season finale of Kite Man: Hell Yeah!). With the trailer came questions we all need answers to. Among them are these 6.
Is Nightwing Red X?
It’s hard to forget that Harley killed Nightwing during season 4 and that he was resurrected thanks to Talia al Ghul and the Lazarus Pit. With that came Dick Grayson’s need for revenge. Since the Lazarus Pit makes people crazy, Nightwing’s reaction could be to leave his past life as Nightwing in an extreme way behind and become Red X.
While Dick Grayson isn’t Red X in the comics, a new universe can mean new alter egos. And with X representing the unknown, it’s the perfect monicker for Dick to go as.
Will Harley get away with murder?
Furthermore, let’s not act like she can’t get away with killing Nightwing. We can assume Ivy will learn what happened when Nightwing returns and tells her that Harley killed him. This will lead to HarlIvy arguing and eventually making up. But that won’t square things with the of the Bat Family.
Is Waller after Harley and Ivy
During the season 3 premiere of Harley Quinn, Waller went after HarlIvy. The United States may have let things slide since Gotham City was no longer part of the U.S. The move to Metropolis may have changed that. The powers that be now have a reason to go after her again and Enchantress is the right person for the job. Enchantress is among the few people who can match and beat Ivy in power.
Are the Gotham City Sirens a thing?
Season 4 ended with Harley, Ivy, Barbara Gordon, and Catwoman becoming the Gotham City Sirens. Can they still call themselves that if they aren’t in Gotham? It’s in the name and the Metropolis City Sirens doesn’t work. To build the team only for them to break up would be weird. Although, Dick Grayson returning and telling Barbara what Harley did would immediately end their group and gives HarIvy another reason to leave Gotham.
WTF, Batman?!
Bruce Wayne got himself out of prison after seeing how bad things were in Gotham. He said Gotham needed him and made a call to get released. The season 5 trailer shows that he did a poor job of helping Gotham. Which leaves this writer to ask, WTF, BATMAN?!
Some Elseworld Batmen will be bad, but it’s doubtful they’re worse than Harley Quinn’s Dark Knight. It’s one thing to stink at your job. It’s another when Harley, Ivy, and her gang are better at it and they’re all villains. There’s no excuse.
Poison Ivy's new job
Lex Luthor made Poison Ivy the head of Metropolis’ Green Initiative. On the surface, this seems like something nice on Luthor’s part. But we all know Luthor does nothing altruisticly. He’s up to something and it won’t be good. At the least, he’s looking for good PR. At worst, he’s studying Ivy’s powers or trying to kill her. Ivy and Harley just thwarted his plan. There's no way he's over that.
Where is Superman?
You know things are bad when Joker has to ask Lois Lane to get Superman. Brainiac is attacking Metropolis and the Man of Steel is unavailable? That means Brainiac already has him or there are shenanigans with Harley Quinn. The latter is more likely and it probably involves Enchatrness and Amanda Waller.
