Episode 4 of The Penguin is more than the best episode of the season. “Cent'Anni” may be the best television of 2024. Cristin Milioti had the performance of a lifetime by brilliantly depicting the tragedy and eventual triumph of Sofia Falcone. They treated her like a monster and learned that actions have consequences. But the question now is what’s next? Before we can get into that, let this writer explain what happened.
Before she stepped into the scene, the Falcone Family looked down at Sofia. Sofia's father frames her for the murders he committed leaving her to be sent to Arkham Hospital. While there, Sofia was mistreated, abused, and forced to become everything she was set up to be. What’s worse is that Sofia's family sent letters to the judge calling her a threat to herself and others. The only person who stood by her side was her brother, Alfredo.
“Their names are worth saying. Victims are so quickly forgotten, aren’t they?” -Sofia Falcone
Her return to her father Carmine Falcone’s home is the perfect example of mess around and find out. Sofia stood up in front of her family and gave a speech about everything that was done to her. Despite what they did, the Falcone Family wouldn’t acknowledge the part they played in destroying Sofia's life. With that, Sofia became justified in her next move.
After dinner, Sofia gets Carla Viti’s daughter Gia and takes her outside to the Falcone’s garden for a sleepover. When they woke up, Sofia told Gia to go back to sleep, grabbed the gas mask from her bookbag, and walked into the Falcone mansion. That’s when we see everyone in the house dead from the gas leak Sofia caused.
Sofia struts through the mansion to ensure everyone is dead before walking into Johnny Viti's room. He was the only one left alive and this was intentional. The last thing we see is Sofia telling Johnny they need to talk.
"You don't have to worry about that. I'm gonna make sure that you never have to fight any monsters." -Sofia Falcone
Sofia will be the head of the Falcone Family. Whether it’s publicly or if Johnny is the face remains to be seen. However, the former makes more sense since organized crime tends to be sexist. Plus, Sofia wants Oz Cobb dead for killing her brother (episode 1) and leaving her fate to be decided by her family’s enemy, Nadia Falcone (episode 3). She may play it as if she's gone to give Oz a false sense of security. Whatever happens, Caped Crusades will be here to report it.
