It’s okay to admit when you’re wrong and this writer will do it now. For months he’s been saying that Cristin Milioti would win a Golden Globe Award for her role as Sofia Falcone/Gigante in The Penguin. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. During the 82nd Golden Globes, the great Jodie Foster walked away with the award for Best Actress, Limited Series Golden Globe for True Detective: Night Country where she played Liz Danvers.
The fourth season of HBO’s anthology wasn’t as beloved as the first (starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey) or the third (starring Mahershala Ali). Nevertheless, Jodie Foster was great throughout and the season itself was fantastic. It was different in a way that helped show that True Detective could expand how it’s written. That being said, Cristin Milioti was snubbed.
First and foremost, this writer isn’t taking anything away from Jodie Foster or True Detective. But, come on. Cristin Milioti wasn’t just great. She was groundbreakingly good. She came onto the scene playing a character that only comic book fans knew about and killed. Not only that, Milioti looked nothing like the source material and no one complained (something comic fans do often). She was talked about positively on social media after every performance and made people feel for Sofia despite doing questionable things. That’s something only a few performers can do.
Despite losing, Cristin Milioti’s role in The Penguin won’t be forgotten. Especially not the fourth episode of the season. It was the kind of performance that people will look back on whenever the best comic book characters are named. It wasn't just the way she was treated. She transformed in front of our eyes. Then, when Sofia had enough of the way her family acted around and spoke to her, she gave a speech that sent chills down viewers' spines. She’s also largely responsible for people wanting a second season of The Penguin. Or, and just throwing this out there, maybe there should be a Sofia Gigante series instead.
Sofia Gigante has a lot going on. She’s currently in Arkham, her sister (Selina Kyle aka Catwoman) reached out to her, and she probably still wants revenge on Oz Cobb. That’s more than enough to fill an entire season starring Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Gigante. And if Lauren LeFranc is writing it, there's no way it fails. So, we don't need Oz Cobb, all we need is Cristin Milioti.
