The Penguin won't have a bonus episode tonight on HBO, but...
By Mark Lynch
The season finale of The Penguin on HBO Max didn’t disappoint because all of the storylines that were built up had a fitting conclusion. Sofia Gigante (formerly Sofia Falcone) and Oz Cobb’s gang war ended with Oz (once again) assisting in Sofia being sent to Arkham. Oz successfully united the crime families thanks to an uprising of soldiers killing their leaders for treating them poorly.
And then there’s the tragic ending of the relationship between Victor Aguilar and Oz. Oz sees Victor as a weakness because he cares about him. Sure, you can see why Oz would think that, but look at everything he’s done for him. Besides saving Oz’s life throughout the series, Victor is the reason Oz is in charge. Vic’s speech struck a chord with Link. When Sofia pitched the idea that whoever brought her Oz would be in charge, Link and the other soldiers realized it was time for a regime change.
With the conclusion of the storylines came the beginning of new ones. The Bat Signal shined in the sky to remind fans that Batman is still around (where he was remains to be seen). Oz is clearly in denial about what’s happening with his mother and starts calling Eve Karlo “Ma”. Meanwhile, she’s in a vegetative state in his penthouse.
The biggest reveal is Sofia gets a letter from Selina Kyle. While we don’t know what it says, Sofia smiles as she’s reading it. Hopefully, it’s about them being siblings and Selina planning to break her sister out of Arkham.
Unfortunately, you’ll be disappointed if you’re hoping for a surprise episode of The Penguin. As great as it would be for HBO to give fans one more episode, this isn’t something they do. Once they call for a season finale, that’s what you’re getting. And since the premiere of Dune: Prophecy is in The Penguin’s time slot, there’s no chance we’re seeing Oz and Sofia this Sunday. However, this isn’t the end for them.
There’s been talk about The Penguin returning for a second season. Considering how much fans loved the show, it wouldn’t be surprising if the limited series was renewed. Lauren LeFranc’s epic show delivered in ways no one saw coming. So much that we should see her get nominated and win Emmys and Oscars for her writing.
Is there a chance that The Penguin won’t get a second season? Of course. However, one thing’s for certain, we haven’t seen the last of Oz Cobb and Sofia Gigante. Whether it’s in The Batman sequel, a possible Joker series, or something else altogether (maybe a Sofia Gigante limited series), we will see the stars of The Penguin again. Stay tuned to Caped Crusades to see when that is.
