The Penguin Episode 6: "Gold Summit" recap and review
By Mark Lynch
During episode 5 of The Penguin Oz Cobb and Victor Aguilar were starting their empire with nothing but an empty, abandoned subway tunnel and a plan. Now, his empire is up and running. They're selling his drug Bliss all over Gotham City via his underground tunnels.
There was no doubt that Oz would get his business going, but the creative team starting this episode with a time jump was brilliant. It was also smart that they immediately got into the cost of doing business with Oz.
Sofia Gigante and Sal Maroni are eating dinner and discussing what to do about Oz. They can’t find him and everyone they send after Oz’s guys lose them. So Sofia says everyone working with Oz must understand you can’t work with him without repercussions. But, again, Oz isn’t an idiot. He understands people better than Sofia or Sal. He tells his guys to give the product for free to create a demand.
Instead of waiting for the other shoe to drop, Sofia and Sal look for someone Oz cares about. They break into his old apartment searching for anything they can use on him. As Sofia goes through Oz’s things, she finds a picture of Eve Karlo with a special note saying the last song was for him. She now knows the one person Oz cares about.
"You're strong, kid." -Oz Cobb to Victor Aguilar
The character development for The Penguin has been superb. Eve being smart enough to understand how Sofia works and not having a care in the world with the threat of death was fantastic. Victor slowly becoming someone he is one thing. The part people should notice is his stutter. After his conversation with Oz in episode 2, his stutter is slowly going away. He's becoming more confident as the show continues. It makes you wonder what he'll be like if he survives.
And then there’s Dr. Julian Rush. There’s no way that he isn’t Victor Zsasz. At first, there could have been some doubt. The two characters don’t have the same name or occupation. However, as you can see with his sex with Sofia, he’s into being hurt. Now, Zsasz's need to cut is different than Julian’s, but the two can be connected. Plus there's the way he said he wants to feel the same thing Sofia did when she killed her family.
But, the biggest character development came in the last minutes of this episode. We’ve been waiting for Oz to have his big moment and he did. He united the gangs. As I said earlier, Oz understands people better than Sofia and Sal. He told the other gangs the truth that Sofia and Sal don’t care about them and probably don’t know their names. It was a speech that shifted the power in Gotham City’s criminal underground.
It's too bad happiness probably won't last. Sofia is in Oz’s home with murder in her eyes. Stay tuned to Caped Crusades to see what happens next.
