Rumor: Absolute Batman could introduce his greatest enemy
By Mark Lynch
There are certain villains in Batman’s life that he can’t defeat on a whim. Characters like Joker and Ra’ al Ghul are on that list. It should be the same for The Dark Knight in the Absolute Universe. Joker was already shown in Absolute Batman No. 1 and Ra's is probably coming at some point since the League of Assassins was mentioned in the same issue (Alfred says Joker killed them).
When asked “Which of the classic villains are you most excited to see Batman face-off against in the absolute universe?” Snyder replied with one word, "bane." If you’re a fan of any of the Caped Crusader’s antagonists, you should be pumped to see the monster from the island of Santa Prisca. If Absolute Black Mask is this terrifying, imagine what Bane will do. However, considering things are different here, we'll witness something we haven't seen.
Snyder’s Absolute Universe has already changed things. Jim Gordon is the Mayor of Gotham City, Joker is a billionaire that doesn’ laugh, and Martha Wayne is still alive. Whatever alterations are made to Bane will be noticeable. The question is what they will be.
With Bruce Wayne being built like a tank, making Bane as big or bigger could be redundant. Or maybe it’ll look like Godzilla fighting another Kaiju. The latter could be likely. Thankfully, Scott Snyder is an amazing writer and Nick Dragotta’s art fits perfectly in this universe. That means whatever Bane looks like will work.
Another question to ask is what Bane’s life is like. If changes are made to the heroes' and villains’ stories, he won’t likely be raised in a prison. Instead, we could be looking at someone with privilege. That doesn’t mean he won’t be as deadly or skilled. It’s just a different kind of origin story. As we've seen with characters like Wilson Fisk, Norman Osborn, and Vandal Savage, wealth doesn't make someone weak. Sometimes it provides people with a wider variety of options. In this case, it could be fighting.
Since Bane’s backbreaker is a signature move, maybe he’s a wrestler who wants to test himself and fight people for real. Perhaps wrestling is his legitimate job and contract killing is how he makes riches. Or he could be a reality TV star like Marvel Comics' Ultimate Kraven the Hunter’s first origin story (without being a fraud). No matter the direction, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s interpretation will be great and this writer is all in (pun intended).
