Unfortunately, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League wasn’t received with good reviews. The Rocksteady’s video game (set in the Batman Arkham universe) didn’t have the gameplay people wanted and fans didn’t like how the Justice League was treated, especially the death of Batman. Thankfully, there’s good news for fans of video games and the Dark Knight. It’s reported that Rocksteady is developing a new Batman game.
Let’s be clear, nothing has been confirmed. The rumor (as reported by comicbook.com) comes from Nick Baker of Xbox Era on Twitter. Baker's rumors have been reliable. However, as this article is being written, nothing has been announced on Rocksteady's website or social media pages. Nevertheless, if this comes out to be true, then Rocksteady is in a good and bad position.
First, let’s start with the bad. Rocksteady needs a good outing. The Batman Arkham series is one of the best video games ever, but that isn’t enough to keep fans. Gaming is an expensive hobby. People aren’t going to spend $50 or more on a game they aren’t sure about. A failure here could turn Rocksteady into an unreliable video game company.
Now for the good news. Rocksteady has the formula. Batman Arkham didn’t have to change much in their series. The gameplay, characters, and voice acting were perfect. The only thing that needed changing was new stories and updated moves.
For example, the Batmobile was added since Arkham Knight was bigger. It made travel easier and added more adventures, puzzles to solve, and ways to fight. The other thing Rocksteady has going for them is a long list of characters and stories to choose from.
When the rumor started floating around social media, Batman Beyond's Terry McGinnis was among the names thrown around. This is an amazing idea. First, his mode of travel would be cooler. His flying makes it easier and more fun. Plus, he has a futuristic Batmobile for people who love to drive/fly.
There are also characters and gadgets that people don’t know about. That means different attacks from what was used in the Arkham series. This gives gamers a new experience. It may lead people to buy the Batman Beyond comic books or watch the animated series.
Of course, there are obvious choices like Nightwing, Red Hood, Robin (Tim Drake or Damian Wayne), and Batgirl (Cassandra Cain, Stephanie Brown, or Barabara Gordon). They're recognizable names and faces. If they wanted to try something new, Batwoman (Kate Kane), Harley Quinn, and Duke Thomas are options.
Or, and hear me out, they could try what many thought Arkham Knights failed at. Give gamers options by adding a specific character for the designated story. People love variety and this could be the right time to try it. You may not be able to have the entire Bat Family, but a change in pace could be what Rocksteady needs.
Stay tuned to Caped Crusades to see what Rocksteady does with Batman next.
