Penguin: Who is Sofia Falcone and should Cristin Milioti play her

Cristin Milioti doesn’t have the size that Sofia Falcone did in Batman: The Long Halloween, but she has the acting skills to play her in Max’s The Penguin.

The Max premiere of DC’s newest mini-series Penguin is less than a month away (debuting on September 18). The trailer below shows Oswald Cobblepot settling into replacing Carmine Falcone. Part of that came killing and attempting to keep control of Gotham City’s underworld away from the law. It looks like a thankless job. However, it's a means to get what he and his mother want and need.

During the trailer, Oswald is interrupted by Milos Grapa. Milos shocks Oswald by bringing in Falcone’s daughter, Sofia (played by Cristin Milioti). Sofia was in Arkham Asylum and wasn’t supposed to be released. At least not yet. In Sofia's own words, she’s been “rehabilitated.”

Cristin Milioti is five feet two inches and not someone who looks like she could overpower Two-Face (but I could be wrong). That will leave comic book fans to wonder if Milioti is the right choice for this character. The answer is an emphatic yes.

Who is Sofia Falcone

Sofia Falcone made her first appearance in Batman: Long Halloween. She’s tall, has broad shoulders, and is powerful enough to lift an adult man off his feet with a noose. When her father Carmine got annoyed with Riddler, Sofia squeezed Riddler's head until blood came out of his nose. Then with one bop to the head, she knocked him out. Riddler may be small, but that’s still a major feat of strength.

"You think I want Sofia Falcone knocking on my door?" -The Penguin trailer

In the Penguin trailer, someone said that she's The Hangman. During Batman: Dark Victory Sofia was Hangman. If this is true in the mini-series (it remains to be seen) there’s hidden strength to her. At the very least she's like Harley Quinn who's crazy makes her stronger than she looks.

Clips from Sofia's time in Arkham show she can more than handle herself and that people should be scared of her. That’s why Sofia’s size not being comic book accurate doesn’t matter. As long as the performer remains intimidating everything will work out. Thankfully, Cristin Milioti has a résumé that shows her greatness.

Cristin Milioti’s performances in Made for Love and Black Mirror are enough for me. Both roles showed she’s more than a comedic actor. She can be dramatic too. The trailer and photos from The Penguin are a side I’ve been waiting to see. This will be the first time she’s ruthless, cunning, and flat-out brutal for an audience this big. When the mini-series ends fans will be raving about her role and waiting to see what's next.
