Joker 2 will be available on HBO Max soon, but should you care?

You may have heard some awful things about Joker: Folie a Deux that made you avoid seeing it in theaters. Now that it’s debuting on HBO Max, it’s time to watch it and judge for yourself.

The success of a movie at the box office doesn’t always indicate whether the project is good or not. Plenty of films have done poorly at theaters only to be one of the most streamed on a platform. At one point, Madame Web was on Netflix’s top ten and it’s one of the worst movies this writer has ever seen (sorry for being harsh, but it's true). Speaking of movies that didn’t do well in theaters, we have the “musical thriller” by director Todd Phillips starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, Joker: Folie a Deux.

According to Screen Rant, Joker 2 had a $200 million budget and made $206 million at the box office. Despite making more than its money back, the film is considered a flop that most critics and audiences didn’t enjoy. Does that mean it's not worth watching and judging for yourself? Absolutely not. Especially when it drops on a streaming platform you're already paying for.

If you didn’t make it to the theaters to see Joker: Folie a Deux and you have HBO Max, there’s good news. Todd Phillips’ recent comic book project will be available on Friday, December 13th, 2024. This gives everyone with the service a chance to give Joker 2 another chance or see it for the first time. And, if you're the latter, this writer thinks you should give the movie a chance despite what you may have heard from everyone from experts and viewers.

The reviews are a big part of the less-than-positive box office sales. People won’t go out of their way and spend an absurd amount of money to watch something people are downing. After hearing and reading what was said, people decided to either not see the Joker 2 altogether or wait for it to stream for free. Now that it's coming to Max, you can decide for yourself and save money. Plus you can get answers to questions and rumors you may have seen online and decide if they're warranted or bogus.

Is Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as Arthur Fleck as good or bad as you’ve heard? Is this really a musical or a movie with a collection of songs? And with the songs, are they as “nerve-racking” as Todd Phillips said they are? Is the hearsay about this essentially being a waste of time accurate? How about the ending that goes against everything Christopher Nolan wanted to preserve about Heath Ledger’s Joker? Is it as awful as it sounds? Judge for yourself on Friday, December 13th.
