If you had told this writer that Colin Farrell would beat out Andrew Scott (Ripley), Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer), Kevin Kline (Disclaimer), Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), and Ewan McGregor (A Gentleman in Moscow) for a Golden Globe, he would have laughed. Yet, here we are. Collin Farrell was honored at the 82nd Golden Globes with his third of these awards for his role as Oz Cobb in The Penguin.
Collin Farrell previously won his Golden Globes for The Banshees of Inisherin (Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy in 2023) and In Bruges (Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical in 2009). Farrell joked during his awards speech saying, "No one to thank on this one. I did it all by myself," then went on to thank the makeup artist, Michael Marino (who also designed Oz Cobb’s look) saying, “I guess it's prosthetics for here on out,”.
"I drank black coffee, listened to '80s music, and I became a canvas for that team's brilliance."Colin Farrell
To say that it’s shocking that Colin Farrell won is an understatement and it has nothing to do with the actor himself. There’s a stigma behind superhero movies not being worthy of Golden Globes or Oscars despite great performances from performers like Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta, Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool, and Hugh Jackman in Logan. You could even throw in Robert Downey Jr. He was phenomenal throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The one question that should be asked is why you must play an evil character to win this award. The only actors in a comic book project to win big time are Heath Ledger (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role) and Joaquin Phoenix (Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama) who both played the Joker (Ledger in The Dark Knight and Phoenix in Joker). They each won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for their respective roles. Meanwhile, a debate can be made that Cristin Milioti (who played Sophia Falcone/Gigante) was snubbed.
While having to be a deplorable character may be the only way to win, it’s good that comic book projects are being recognized. It’s a reminder that superhero fatigue isn’t a thing. If it's good people will watch and praise it. When it comes to awards, it would be nice to see other performers get recognized for their work when it’s deserved. However, at the end of the day, if the project makes money, they’ll keep getting work. And from the look of movies like Fantastic Four and Superman debuting later this year, comic book projects will continue to be profitable.
