Lego Batman in The Lego Movie Had To Have Chris Nolan’s Ok

Lego Batman from the very entertaining Lego Movie was a very different take on Batman than we usually see. Far from the seriousness applied in most of his movies and books, and actually portrays as somewhat of a clueless jerk (to pretty funny effects). Chris Nolan, who directed the most recent trilogy of Batman films, may not be making Batman films anymore, but he’s still more or less the steward of Batman at this point, and the producers had to get Nolan’s blessing to make their more humorous version of Lego Batman in the Lego Movie.

Lego Movie, producer Dan Lin explained how he pitched the idea for their Lego Batman to both Warner Bros. & Nolan:

"You guys have your live-action Batman, we have what we called the LEGO Batman. A Batman that’s very self-aware. That is, you know, a bit of a jerk at times.’ As soon as they understood there are different universes, that worked out okay,” Lin said. But that was a big challenge going to all the different rightsholders, saying, ‘This is how we’re going to take your character and Lego-ize it"

Clearly Nolan liked the idea as Lego Batman was one of the most entertaining parts of The Lego Movie. We’ll get to see Lego Batman in his own film in 2017.
